Choosing the Right Lube for YOU

Vaginal dryness is a common symptom throughout many different stages of life. In fact, it is totally normal to need to add a little lube into the mix during different seasons of life, varying times of your menstrual cycle or even with various medications. Breastfeeding and postpartum mama’s are likely to find that things down below are a little… dryer than they used to be. This is because of estrogen levels; it’s normal and likely to last throughout lactation. But postpartum isn’t the only time you could experience this…menopause sneaks right up on ya and can have the same effect. If you haven’t tried a lube, now is the time! There are so many great ones out there that can not only enhance sexual pleasure but make it a comfortable, safer experience as well.

Types of Lube:

Water based lubes:

This option is the cleanest option; you don’t need to worry about a mess on your sheets or clothing. It has a tendency to feel very natural but because it absorbed into the kin, you may find that you need to reapply throughout sex. Water based lubes are ideal for people with sensitive skin and is considered safe with all types of toys and condoms. Make sure to read the label as many have additional additives that can be irritating for sensitive skin.

Silicone based lubes:

One of the messier options… be careful of staining. However, silicone based lube is generally very thin, making it unnoticeable and is long lasting as it does not absorb into the skin. This lube is great to use with condoms but cannot be used with silicone toys. Silicone lube tends to be the pricier option.

Oil based lubes

One of my favorites, we usually suggest good, old coconut oil. This option is extra slippery and longer lasting than water based, so no need to reapply. It can also be used externally and even for massages. Although it can be used with silicone toys, it CANNOT be used with latex condoms as it will make them more likely to break. Similar to silicone based lubricants, it can be a bit messier and tends to stain.

Other Considerations:

When checking ingredients on your lubes, avoid the following:

  • Parabens

  • Chlorhexidine Gluconate

  • Cyclomethicone and cyclopentasiloxane

  • Additional flavors and frangrances
